Pinsa-Style Pizza is Trending! It’s not a surprise, since Pinsa is a healthier alternative to pizza! More digestible than traditional pizza due to its different dough hydration, pinsa also has fewer carbohydrates, sugar, and fat. Today we look to Pizzicata in Carefree, Arizona — the state’s first pinsa pizzeria.
“Pinsa is 48 % less sugar & 85 % less fat than traditional pizza,” says Federico Venturini, co-owner of Pizzicata. With the owners straight from Italy, this Phoenix restaurant was established in 2018.
Long before the days of pizza, Pinsa was introduced and crafted by the Romans using wheat, soy, and rice flours as the main ingredients in the dough. The resulting Pinsa contained less gluten, fewer carbs, and less fat while maintaining a crispy yet light crust when baked therefore making it more digestible yet still delizioso.
Pinsa looks like the pizza you know. A noticeable difference is visually it’s pressed down with the fingers versus being rolled out, so it’s not going to look perfectly round and may include a few bumps. It’s authentically rustic!
